Task Blog Entry #9: Survey Systems

The picture above is an example of the Dominion Land Survey System in Fort St. John, British Colombia. Since the lots are large, square and within one of the only areas of BC that the DLS was established is evidence that this is likely a DLS system. Since it’s a DLS system, the area was likely settled around 1869 when the DLS was created.

The picture above is an example of a District Lot system in Vancouver, British Colombia. Due to the lot’s being random in size, connected to larger networks and in a larger city is evidence of the area being a district lot system. The district lot system started in 1859 in BC, so the area was likely settled around this time.

The picture above shows a Later Township System outside of Teeswater in Ontario. Due to the fact that the lots are longer with major roads bellow them leads me to believe that it is a later township system. Also, the fact that it is in Ontario is a strong indicator of later township. As this system resembles a single-front system, this area was likely established around 1738-1818.
